9 January 2018 — Software Update
As a result of recent changes with the printing infrastructure (upgrade to the CUPS server), the old Solaris lpr commands are not working as expected. They have been replaced with the standard CUPS lpr replacement commands.

The most significant change is the disappearance of the printer-simplex and printer-duplex names. Instead it is necessary to use the -o sides=one-sided or -o sides=two-sided-long-edge options to lpr.

You can create shell aliases for the various commands, or you can use lpoptions to create custom instances of printers. If you normally use a printer (lwsnb146bw) that defaults to duplex, but you occassionally want to print simplex, you can create a simplex instance with:

$ lpoptions -p lwsnb146bw/simplex -o sides=one-sided

Then use -Plwsnb146bw/simplex when printing.

3-4 January 2018 — System Downtime
Solaris 10 systems will be updated to the current patch level. They will be rebooted between 5:00 PM Wednesday, January 3 and 8:00 AM on Thursday, January 4. Individual machines should only take about 5 minutes to reboot some time during the the time window, but because of server dependencies the effective downtime may be longer.

3 January 2018 — System Downtime
College of Science IT will be updating the kernel/modules on CS instructional lab Linux machies. The labs included are: HAAS G040 (borg), HAAS G056 (escher), HAAS 257 (xinu), LWSN B146 (moore), LWSN B148 (pod), LWSN B158 (sslab). beginning @9a. The outage will last approximately 15 minutes (per lab) and the machines will be rebooted. This update is to fix a problem with autofs. *NOTE: This has been rescheduled from 27-December-2017.*

26 December 2017 — System Downtime
College of Science IT will be updating the kernel/modules on grad file-server (antor.cs) and faculty/staff file-server (madoc.cs) beginning @9a. The outage will last approximately 15 minutes and the machines will be rebooted. This update is to fix a problem with autofs. During this time user filesystems will be unavailable.

22 December 2017 — System Downtime
College of Science IT will be updating the kernel/modules on undergrad file-server (data.cs), beginning @8a. This update is to fix a problem with autofs.

25 November 2017 — System Downtime
College of Science IT will be updating CS faculty/staff UNIX file-server (madoc.cs) to Ubuntu Linux, beginning @8a. This will make it consistent with other UNIX file-servers.

10 November 2017 — System Downtime
College of Science IT is updating CS compute node mc18 to Ubuntu Linux, beginning @8a. This will make it consistent with the instructional lab machines.
