Computer Systems Status


12 March 2024 — Scheduled Downtime
On Tuesday evening March 12 between 7:00 PM and midnight Purdue IT will be rerouting network connections on a core switch in the LWSN data center. This will impact wired network connections throughout LWSN and some connections in HAAS (HAAS 279). The actual downtime for a given connection will likely be only one or two times of a minute or two duration while cables are moved from the old switch to the new one, but plan for a couple 30 minute outages during the 5-hour maintenance window.

If the work cannot be completed on Tuesday evening, there is a backup maintenance window on Thursday evening March 14 between 7:00 PM and midnight.

Note: the maintenance window has been extended since the initial posting.

10 March 2024 — Scheduled Downtime
On Sunday evening March 10 between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM the myCS portal (my.cs.purdue.edu) will be down. During that time we will be migrating the backend database from one system to another.

1 January 2024 — Software Update
Beginning January 1, the Slurm job scheduling system controller will be moved from mc17.cs.purdue.edu to queue.cs.purdue.edu. Also during the time, the Slurm software package will be upgraded from 20.02.1 to 21.08.5. After the upgrade, users will no longer need to use -
module load slurm


28 October 2023 — Scheduled Downtime
This weekend, October 28-29, Purdue CS will be hosting a site for the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) for the East Central NA (ECNA) region. Four of the instructional labs in LWSN will be used for the contest  ̵ B146, B148, B158, and B160.

There will be a practice session Saturday evening 7:30pm-9pm. The official contest will be Sunday 11am-4pm. During the practice and contest sessions, the labs will be closed completely to outside use.

During the morning and afternoon Saturday IT staff will be re-imaging some of the machines for the contest. Re-imaged machines will be marked with a sign and will not be available for use. Other machines will be available for use until about an hour before the scheduled sessions. Please plan accordingly.

9 October 2023 — Scheduled Downtime
Beginning at 9:00 AM the undergraduate computer server (data.cs) will be unavailable for approximately one hour, to have its network connection upgraded to 10Gbps. During this time, data.cs.purdue.edu will be unavailable for use.

13 August 2023 — Scheduled Downtime
Beginning at 10:00 PM the department package file server (ban.cs) will be unavailable for approximately two hours, for system software upgrades. During this time, ban.cs.purdue.edu will be unavailable for use. All diretories in /p/packagename will be unavailable as well.

6 August 2023 — Scheduled Downtime
Due to ongoing account compromises, password-only Secure Shell (SSH) access to CS Linux machines will be discontinued at 8AM, 6 August 2023. At that time, multifactor authentication using Purdue Login will be required when using SSH.

At the SSH password prompt, enter your Purdue career account password followed by ,push to receive a Duo notifcation or ,NNNNNN where NNNNNN is the 6-digit code from your hardware token or Duo app.

6 August 2023 — Scheduled Downtime
Beginning at 12:00 AM the graduate file server (antor.cs) and the faculty/staff file server (madoc.cs) will be unavailable for approximately two hours, for system software upgrades. During this time, both antor.cs.purdue.edu and madoc.cs.purdue.edu will be unavailable for use.

28 July 2023 — Scheduled Downtime
Beginning at 08:00 AM the network connection for riker.cs will be moved to a 10Gbps switch. During this time, undergraduate users may experience a brief outage of their home directories. The move should take approximately twenty minutes.

16 July 2023 — Unscheduled Downtime
The server for www-cgi.cs.purdue.edu died some time Sunday. It was a very old server that provided CGI service for a few legacy user applications. The machine has been removed from service. Alternatives will be provided to end users.

13 June 2023 — Scheduled Downtime
Beginning at 09:00 AM Purdue IT will be migrating the CSORA Oracle database from stand-alone to multitenant configuration. The migration will take 2-3 hours. The database will be unavailable during this time.

2 June 2023 — Scheduled Downtime
Beginning at 09:00 AM the ML compute servers (ml[00..08].cs). will be unavailable for approximately six hours for system software upgrades. During this time, ML slurm queues and data storage will be unavailable for use.

23 May 2023 — Scheduled Downtime
Beginning at 12:00 AM the undergraduate compute servers (mc[17..21].cs). will be unavailable for approximately two hours, for system software upgrades. During this time, mc17.cs.purdue.edu, mc18.cs.purdue.edu, mc19.cs.purdue.edu, mc20.cs.purdue.edu and mc21.cs.purdue.edu will be unvailable for use.

22 May 2023 — Scheduled Downtime
Beginning at 12:00 AM the undergraduate compute server (data.cs) will be unavailable for approximately two hours, for system software upgrades. During this time, data.cs.purdue.edu will be unvailable for use.

19 May 2023 — Scheduled Downtime
TeXLive on Linux hosts has been replaced with a TeXlive module. Users can use -
module load texlive
to use tex/latex/pdftex/pdflatex/xdvi/dvips, etc.
