Unit Introduction

In this unit, students examine the information created when people use digital devices and online services and consider why that information must be protected. Students explore digital footprints, private data, the relationship between privacy and security, common cybersecurity threats, and appropriate protections and responses. They then apply operating-system knowledge to manage device security and permissions, optimize settings for different users, use technical documentation, and troubleshoot technology safely.

Unit Objective

Students will explain why digital information requires protection, evaluate privacy and security decisions, recommend appropriate cybersecurity protections and responses, optimize operating-system and software settings to meet user goals, and use documentation and a structured process to troubleshoot common technology problems.

Day 1: What Is a Digital Footprint?

Students identify information created or collected through online activity, distinguish public information from private data, and explain why digital information may require protection.

Day 2: Privacy vs. Security

Students distinguish privacy from security and analyze situations in which stronger security may affect privacy, convenience, or usability.

Day 3: Cyber Threats & Protection

Students identify common threats—including phishing, malware, and ransomware—and match threats with appropriate protections and response actions.

Day 4: Cybersecurity Project — Research & Topic Selection

Students select a cybersecurity topic, identify the relevant threat or concern, and gather accurate information, examples, consequences, and protective practices.

Day 5: Cybersecurity Project — Design & Development

Students create a cybersecurity poster or board game that communicates accurate information and practical protection or response strategies.

Day 6: Cybersecurity Project — Presentation & Reflection

Students present their projects, evaluate the accuracy and usefulness of cybersecurity recommendations, and reflect on how security decisions protect users and data.

Day 7: Operating Systems & Security Settings

Students explain how an operating system manages applications and hardware, then examine settings related to privacy, security, permissions, access, and updates without making unauthorized changes.

Day 8: Optimize Your Device

Students analyze user scenarios and recommend settings or actions related to accessibility, performance, battery life, privacy, security, sound, and productivity while identifying possible tradeoffs.

Day 9: Using Technical Documentation

Students follow and evaluate technical documentation for clarity, sequence, prerequisites, compatibility, verification, and troubleshooting support.

Day 10: Troubleshooting Technology

Students apply a seven-step troubleshooting process to common hardware and software problems: identify the problem, gather information, check simple causes, use reliable documentation, try one safe solution, test the result, and document or escalate.

Safety and Privacy Expectations

Students may locate, observe, evaluate, and recommend settings or actions, but they should not make unauthorized changes. Unless specifically approved by the teacher, students should not reveal private information, change passwords or account details, install or remove software, delete files, create or remove accounts, disable security protections, change administrator or network settings, or open or repair equipment. Screenshots, fictional profiles, simulations, and teacher-provided examples may be used when students cannot safely inspect a real device.

By the end of Unit 2, students understand that digital safety depends on informed choices. Privacy, security protections, operating-system settings, clear documentation, and systematic troubleshooting work together to help people manage and protect technology responsibly.
