12-17-2025

Lin Tan, Professor of Computer Science and University Faculty Scholar at Purdue University
Lin Tan, Professor of Computer Science and University Faculty Scholar at Purdue University, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), one of the organization’s most prestigious honors. The distinction recognizes individuals with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in IEEE fields of interest.
Tan was elevated to IEEE Fellow for her contributions to software text analytics, software–AI synergy, and software reliability. Her research advances the understanding and analysis of natural language artifacts in software engineering, including documentation, bug reports, and developer communication, and integrates these insights with artificial intelligence techniques to enhance the reliability, maintainability, and trustworthiness of modern software systems.
“I am truly honored and humbled to be named an IEEE Fellow,” Tan said. “This recognition reflects not only my own work, but also the support and collaboration of many people throughout my career. I am deeply grateful to everyone who nominated and endorsed me, as well as to my students, colleagues, collaborators, department, and family for their unwavering encouragement.”
In addition to this accomplishment, Tan’s contributions to the field have earned her recognition as an ACM Distinguished Member and an ELATES Fellow, reflecting her sustained impact in leadership, research, and service.
Tan leads the ASSET Lab at Purdue, where her research group explores the intersection of software engineering and artificial intelligence. The lab’s work aims to build more dependable and intelligent software systems and has influenced both academic research and real-world software development practices.
The IEEE Fellow grade is conferred annually on a select group of members whose contributions have made a significant impact on technology and society. Fewer than one percent of IEEE’s voting membership is elevated to Fellow status each year.
About the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University
Founded in 1962, the Department of Computer Science was created to be an innovative base of knowledge in the emerging field of computing as the first degree-awarding program in the United States. The department continues to advance the computer science industry through research. U.S. News & World Report ranks the department No. 16 and No. 19 overall in undergraduate and graduate computer science, respectively. Graduates of the program are able to solve complex and challenging problems in many fields. Our consistent success in an ever-changing landscape is reflected in the record undergraduate enrollment, increased faculty hiring, innovative research projects, and the creation of new academic programs.
