CS Students Honored by Computing Research Association

12-06-2004

Computer Science undergraduates Chris Kanich, Stan Luban, and Liz Saftalov received Honorable Mentions in the 2005 Outstanding Undergraduate Award Program of the Computing Research Association (CRA).

The CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Award program recognizes students who show outstanding research potential in an area of computing research.

Chris Kanich is a senior who has done impressive work in the simulation of new wireless network protocols and determining the strengths and weaknesses of the SSFNet network simulator in simulating Internet worm propagation. Chris presented his CS 497 project entitled "Internet Worm Propagation" on December 8th. Chris' research projects have been under the supervision of Professor Nita-Rotaru and Professor Fahmy.

Stan Luban is a junior with notable scholarship and research involvement. He has been working with Professor Kihara and Professor Wanner on the "Conserved Structural Non-Coding RNA Families in Gamma-Proteobacteria." His results have been presented at the Purdue University Undergraduate Research Day (April 17, 2004), the Indiana Bioinformatics Conference at IUPUI (May 27, 2004), and at the Argonne National Laboratories Symposium (Oct 2005).

Liz Saftalov is a senior working with Professor Bailey-Kellogg and Professor A. Friedman in the area of Computational Biology. She is an excellent representative of an emerging group of interdisciplinary scientists working at the interface of computation and biology. She has done a remarkable research project entitled "Tree Algorithms for Protein Engineering: Combinatorial Optimization and Diversity in a Biological Setting."

Congratulations to Chris, Stan, and Liz on this outstanding award!
