How we can help K-12 Teachers

The main focus of the K-12 Outreach program is to improve the quality of the educational experiences for Indiana students in computer science. The majority of this work is done by engaging students in the classroom directly, and working with teachers to improve their pedagogy.

Due to the rapid changes in technology, teaching K-12 computer science can be a daunting proposition. Many new teachers struggle with questions about choice of programming language, decisions about the depth of material to cover, and what kind of projects will best assist their students in content mastery. On top of all of that, most CS teachers work in isolation. Purdue K-12 Outreach would like to help Indiana and Chicago-area teachers in their efforts to bring computer science to their students.

What we have done

Some examples of outreach engagement with K-12 teachers:

  • Purdue CS Educators Summer Academy 2016
  • “Teaching About Data” Educators Workshop with UCLA’s Mobilize Prime NSF Project
  • Presentations of work at professional educators association meetings (IBEA, ICTM, HASTI, CSTA, SIGCSE)

What we can help you do

We are interested in helping K-12 teachers in the following ways.

  • Provide guidance in selecting curriculum or programming languages to best serve your students
  • Help in speaking with school administrators and counselors about computer science as an important area of study
  • Aid in recruiting students to improve the overall health of the computer science program and diversity within the program
  • Connections to other educators and curriculum resources through our local CSTA chapter and the national CSTA.
  • Training in best pedagogical practices via our Purdue University Summer Academy and our CS 180 course on edX.

What we would need from you

A commitment to work with us in spite of all the millions of other things that we know you already do!
