Purdue University - Department of Computer Science - How we can help schools

How we can help schools and youth-serving organizations

The main focus of the K-12 Outreach program is to improve the quality of the educational experiences for Indiana students in computer science. The majority of this work is done by engaging students in the classroom directly, and working with teachers to improve their pedagogy.

Your school corporation may not offer a computer science course, or perhaps only offers courses at one level. If you are a youth-serving organization, you may not have access to instructors or materials needed to provide the quality program that you would like to offer.

What we can help you do

For Indiana and Chicago-area schools, we can help in several ways depending on your specific needs.

  • We can meet with school corporation leaders and curriculum specialists in order to help explain what computer science is and isn't, as well as what options are available for offering CS courses in the middle and high school levels
  • We can bring our ROCS student group to a school in order to help talk to students about computer science, what career options it can provide, and what Purdue Computer Science students do
  • We can provide support for new computer science teachers through participation in our local chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and Purdue sponsored teacher workshops
  • We can offer one-day in-school or multi-week after-school computer science sessions with our Purdue ROCS student group in order to introduce your students and teachers to computer science
  • Support for your students and teachers via our CS 180 course on edX.

For Indiana and Chicago-area youth-serving organizations, we are interested in helping to provide opportunities to the youth that you work with.

  • We can work with your volunteers and full-time staff to develop opportunities to engage kids with computer science
  • We can offer weekend on-campus computer science activities for your learners

What we would need from you

  • A clear commitment to including computer science in your curriculum for the foreseeable future
  • An interest in developing a sustainable program that does not require persistent attention from Purdue's Computer Science Outreach personnel
  • Flexibility with scheduling

Our work with Indiana schools and youth-serving organizations is encouraged by Purdue as part of our school mission, but we always appreciate donations to our Outreach program so that we can continue to provide services to more groups in future years.
