How we can help Purdue Faculty

The main focus of the K-12 Outreach program is to improve the quality of the educational experiences for Indiana students in computer science. The majority of this work is done by engaging students in the classroom directly, and working with teachers to improve their pedagogy.

As a member of Purdue's CS faculty, you may have research that could benefit from reaching either K-12 teachers or students and we would like to help you connect with this audience.

What we have done

Some examples of projects that K-12 Outreach has been involved in:

  • CE21 grant project with Project Lead the Way (PLTW), Purdue’s School of Education and Department of Computer Science
  • MSP with Lafayette School Corporation, Purdue’s College of Science K-12 Outreach Program
  • “Teaching About Data” Educators Workshop with UCLA’s Mobilize Prime NSF Project
  • IBEA Summer Teacher Workshop for Computer Science Educators with CSTA
  • High School Girls Mentoring Program with several Indiana school corporations (Fishers, Mishawaka, Lafayette)
  • Computer Science Summer Camps for middle school and high school aged students

What we can help you do

We are available to participate in faculty proposals that require an outreach component. If your research has an extension that may broaden your impact by working with K-12 students or teachers, we can help you make those connections and tailor your work to reach the intended audience. One of our program goals is to help faculty to improve the quality of their research proposals by expanding the potential for impact.

What we would need from you

  • Proposal deadlines and expectations of the contributions to be made by Phil Sands as the K-12 Outreach Coordinator
  • Budget for: K-12 Outreach Coordinator time; travel for coordinator and students; supplies needed for classroom activities or teacher workshop materials.

For further information, please contact Phil Sands (psands@purdue.edu).
