iSERC : Research
All iSERC research projects are funded by one or more industrial affiliate. The idea for a project may originate in the mind of a faculty member or a representative of an industrial affiliate. This idea is further discussed by the interested faculty member with at least one member of an industrial affiliate. Eventually the idea is either dropped or a proposal is prepared by the faculty member.
This proposal is then presented to the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) that consists of one voting representative from each industrial affiliate. The proposal contains a clear statement of the research problem, a research plan and schedule, budget, deliverables, likely benefit to the industrial affiliates of iSERC, and personnel who will carry out the proposed work. One member of the research team serves as the Principle Investigator (PI).
The proposal is considered accepted for funding if at least one voting member of the IAB indicates that his/her company would like to fund it. For each funded proposal it is mandatory that the PI make a summary presentation to the IAB at each of the biannual meetings of the center. In this presentation the PI summarizes the research objectives, progress made, and a plan for the remaining period.
At least one representative from an industrial affiliate supporting a project is usually in frequent consultation with the PI throughout the duration of the project. This representative has the right to suggest changes/approve changes in the direction of the project and add/remove funds. Note that the outcome of each project is shared by all members of the center. The PI's must be careful not to divulge any properietary information during their presentations or in any publication resulting from their work.
