Why CS 178 ?
Fall 2004 Type almost any keyword of your choice from the basic sciences and do a Google search. You will most likely find a number of sites that show how computers are being used today to enhance research and teaching of science. You name the discipline..Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and of course, Computer Science, and the world is full of people who are using computers to advance the state of the art in their respective fields. Would you not want to be one who can program computers to help you in your scientific adventures? Whether you want to be a scientist or a manager in a firm or a teacher in a high school or whatever...computers are bound to be a part of your life. This course is designed to provide you, in an interesting and fun way, the basic knowledge needed to program computers and use them as tools in your discipline. This course is not for you if you already know computer programming. But if you do not know how to program computers in a high level language such as C or Java, and want to learn it through the Java language, then this is THE course for you.
