Graduate Software Developer Position at Booking.com in Amsterdam

Booking.com BV (the company behind Booking.com™, the market leading online hotel reservation service in the world) and/or its various support companies throughout the world are looking for new graduates to learn and help support the business in the fast-growing hotel markets.

Booking.com is looking for new Graduate Software Developers who are passionate, who are eager to learn, who thrive on challenge, and who believe in success through collaboration – people who will become our next generation of developers!

We offer an international, result-driven, fun, and dynamic environment. If scale and complexity excite you, Booking is the place to B!

B.ready

You stroll into your new office in the center of Amsterdam. You can't wait to see how users are reacting to the new feature you rolled out yesterday, which optimizes search response timings with a new compression algorithm. You soon notice that some users love the new performance while some seems noticeably less impressed. Quickly, you run a few numbers and discover that people with different connection speeds and browsers can behave quite differently. No problem, you jump into your hacker chatroom to bounce some follow-up ideas off the others Devs. In almost no time, you whip together a patch that specifically targets the customers you think would benefit the most and jump into the rollout chatroom to take center-stage and implement the patch live on our site. Soon, volunteers jump in offering to test and try to break not only your patches, but all of the patches currently rolling out to our customers. A few of the test volunteers notice a fatal error in the Javascript experiment tracking, so someone pushes a quick fix, you merge it in, and it all rolls out. You look up at the graphs expectantly and notice they're looking good. Time to pat yourself on the back - all in a day's work at Booking.com

B.responsible

Our technical culture derives strongly from our strong ties to the Perl community. We appreciate what open source means both for our business and also for internal projects. Some of our most useful hacks inside the company have come from someone scratching the proverbial itch.

Even if you do not have Perl experience, your colleagues and personal Mentor will help you get up to speed in order to be able to start solving real problems from day one. As a Graduate Software Developer, you will rotate through three different teams over a 12-month period. You will collaborate in teams, as well as work independently, and will also be responsible for your own personal development. Our strategy is agile and we work in small Scrum teams of 5-7. We do several rollouts every day, are data-driven and do extensive A/B testing.

As a Graduate Software Developer, you will learn and be responsible for the development, performance, and scaling of our public website as well as internal systems, which includes using: Perl (5.14), DBI, Mason, Moose, Sereal, Plack, nginx, Javascript, MySQL, Memcached, Redis, Hadoop, Elasticsearch, git, and CentOS Linux.

B.skilled

By rotating through small start-up like teams and working on a variety of projects, you'll gain maximum exposure to all areas of our business. You'll increase your personal development and gain new efficiencies, all while working in close collaboration with Designers, Business Analysts, Product Owners and other business stakeholders on one of the world's largest Perl websites. You'll learn how we implement changes quickly - don't be surprised to see your code live in our systems within hours of pushing it!
At Booking.com we believe that a good developer is a good developer no matter what technology is involved. We run one of the world's largest Perl websites, but we do not require Perl experience to apply – only a willingness to learn, superior software craftsmanship, and commercial focus.

Our Graduates are enormously talented, and motivated to achieve the best results for their teams. We need candidates who embody the following requirements:

  • Hardcore passion for hacking and programming, with experience in at least one programming language
  • Practical experience in developing, either through internships or some employment, as well as contributions to open source
  • Ability to work independently in small teams
  • Excellent English communication skills, both spoken and written
  • Enthusiasm for working in a large, fast-paced e-commerce environment
  • Highly ambitious with a keen business sense
  • Recent (or soon-to-be) university graduate in Mathematics, Software Engineering, or related field

B.offered

We are a performance-based company that offers career advancement and lucrative compensation, including bonuses and stock potential. We also offer what we call the “Booking Deal” with other competitive perks and benefits. Our Technology Department also hosts monthly hackathons, trainings, and attends/speaks at global conferences.

This position is open to worldwide candidates and in the case of relocation, we will assist you with a generous relocation package, ensuring a smooth transition to working and living in Amsterdam. We have successfully relocated 200+ Technology professionals to Amsterdam in the last year!

Students may contact Adam Reid at adam.reid@booking.com, ideally with a CV and motivation letter.
