Requirements

To download, install, and run the Purdue ASL applications a personal computer connected to the internet and running the Windows operating system (e.g. Vista, XP) is needed.

Installation

1.       Download the zip archive ASLPurdue.zip

a.       Click on the ASLPurdue.zip link (here or above).

b.      Save the archive locally.

c.       Once the download completes, move to the next step.

2.       Unzip the archive in a folder of choice, for example C:\Purdue.

a.       This can be done, for example, by right clicking on the ASLPurdue.zip file and selecting Extract All.

b.      This creates a folder structure in the folder chosen, with ASL as a root. To continue the example above, the folder structure root would be C:\Purdue\ASL.

c.       Inside the ASL folder there are 4 items

                                                               i.      A folder ASLsystem

                                                             ii.      A folder UI

                                                            iii.      An executable file vcssetup.exe (note that depending on the settings on the computer used the extension “.exe” might or might not be visible)

                                                           iv.      An executable file XNAGS31_setup.exe

3.       Install VCC

a.       Run the vcssetup executable (e.g. by selecting the file and then pressing the enter key, or by double clicking on it).

b.      The installation wizard will guide you through the installation, downloading the necessary files, and installing the needed libraries.

4.       Install XNA

a.       Run the XNAGS31_setup.exe executable

Running the Purdue ASL applications

1.       ASL system

a.       Enter folder ASLsystem (e.g. C:\Purdue\ASL\ASLsystem).

b.      Run the ASLAuthoringTool.exe executable (i.e. application).

c.       Refer to this web page http://idealab.tech.purdue.edu/ASl/About.htm and on this documentation for instructions on how to use the system.

2.       New ASL system interface

a.       Enter folder UI (e.g. C:\Purdue\ASL\UI).

b.      Run the ASLAuthoringTool.exe executable (i.e. application).

c.       Pose the character’s hands, limbs, and body using the new graphical user interface.
