In December 1995, funds were granted to create a center for computational image analysis and data visualization. This is an emerging cross-disciplinary field whose rapid growth is driven by advances in computational geometry, computer graphics, and virtual reality that support powerful new analysis and visualization techniques on large complex data models. The center will position Purdue as a leader in this dynamic field by exploiting our unique strengths in science and engineering. It will support the many faculty who perform image analysis and large scale data analysis. It will promote the university goals of interdisciplinary education and research. It will help Purdue recruit and retain talented faculty who use advanced imaging tools. It will increase the competitiveness of applications for shared-instrumentation grants from sources such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. It will help us forge a partnership between Purdue, the Indiana medical community, and the biomedical industry for research and applications. The center is housed in the Computer Sciences Department in the Computer Science Building at Purdue.
