This policy document governs the use of the computer laboratories in rooms HAASG40, HAASG56, HAAS175, HAAS257, PHYS8, PHYS10 and REC108 and applies in addition to the standard CS Department Acceptable Use Policy.
- Dialup Access
- You may access these machines from off campus by using the ITaP RESNET facilities or through a commercial ISP.
- Lab Access
-
At any time, a lab may be open, scheduled, or
closed. During open hours, workstations are available on a
first-come, first-served basis to anyone with an account. During
scheduled hours, workstations are available only to students in
the course for which the lab is scheduled. Labs are available
during closed hours only if a designated "lab sitter" has opened
the room.
Remote access to workstations via rlogin, telnet, or dialup is allowed at all times. (Remote access may be disallowed during scheduled labs if performance becomes a problem.) Note that most (if not all) of the machines in CS175 are running Windows NT and will not (easily) be available for remote access.
- Disk Space
- Disk space is primarily for academic course use only. If space becomes short on a disk partition, we will take several steps to make more space available. Steps include shuffling home directories between partitions, notifying heavy users, and deleting user files. If you are asked to reduce your disk use, you must or files will be deleted for you.
- Games and Other Non-Academic Use
- Be reasonable. If you're not affecting anyone, no one will care. If you are affecting anyone, your account will be frozen. Certain CPU and/or network-intensive activities are known to affect use: e.g., IRCs, MUDs, etc. are not permitted at any time.
- Food
- Food or drinks are not permitted in the labs at any time.
- Account Use
- You are allowed to use your account only on the machines to which your class has been assigned. You must not allow others to use your account.
- Printing
- Please keep printing to a minimum. Use ghostview or xdvi to preview documents before printing. Use "enscript -2rG" (or similar) to print text files in reduced format.
- Backups and Restores
- To guard against the effects of disk failures, all user files are backed up daily. If you inadvertently delete a file, it may be possible to restore it. File restore requests generally take two weekdays, so if your loss is minimal, you might be better off retyping the file(s). In case of emergency, see your instructor.
- PC Reboots
- The PCs in rooms 175 and G040 are to be booted only from standard partitions on the internal hard disk, never from the floppy drive.
- Reporting Problems
- Use the UNIX trouble command or the trouble reporting form to report problems with the computer systems in these labs or to ask for help.
Violation of these policies will result in your account being frozen for one or more days. It will be up to you to work out course project completion with your instructor until (and if) your account is unfrozen.
