UNIX Backup Schedule
Monthly (level 0) backups are performed for all staff maintained UNIX (IRIX, Solaris, Linux, BSD) machines during the first calendar week of each month.
Incremental (level 1-7) backups are performed for all staff maintained UNIX machines daily.
We keep the daily incremental backups for one month. The monthly full backups are kept for two years. After that, we keep only the January, May, and August monthly backups for an additional eight years, or a total of ten years. This means that any file that was on disk for at least a day is generally retrievable for up to a month. Any file that was around more than a month should be retreivable for up to two years.
WARNING: Certain files are automatically removed by the system
- All files in tomb directories are subject to removal at any time (see rm(L) man page for entombing information)
-
All files in tmp directories (
/tmp,/usr/tmp) are removed if not accessed in three days, and may be removed any time if there is a space crunch -
All files in all directories not accessed in three days that match
the following patterns (considered temporary or editor checkpoint
files):
a.outcore#*,*.#*.,**.CKP.emacs_[0-9]**~.*~.nfs*
Windows Backup Schedule
With the exception of departmental and research servers, only
the user's H: drive (a mapped network drive to
\\machinename\homes\username) and its
contents are backed up on staff maintained Windows machines. If
you wish an item(s) to be backed up please place it in your
H: drive, not your desktop or your My
Documents folder. Any items located in the H:\NoBackup
directory will be excluded from backup jobs. If you have items
you do not want backed up or do not need backed up we ask that
you place them in the H:\NoBackup directory.
Monthly full backups (level 0) are performed for all Windows machines during the last weekend of each month.
Differential backups are run on each machine Monday through Thursday. An Incremental backup is done on each machine Friday. No backups are performed Saturday and Sunday. These backups start nightly at 8:30pm.
The daily differential and incremental backups are kept for one month. The monthly full backups are kept for one year.
