The IMAP and POP servers on Solaris systems were updated to the UW IMAP 2007 version. The software update is nothing more than patches and bug fixes.
However, there are two configuration changes associated with the update. First, non-SSL IMAP and POP connections have been disabled. You will need to configure your mail client to use SSL for retrieving your mail, even for local connections.
Second, the default mailbox type has been changed from the old (UNIX) mbox format to the mix format. The advantage of the mix format is that it allows folders to contain messages and subfolders. It also allows better simultaneous access to a folder by more than one IMAP client.

30 July 2007

Over the past year we have been transitioning from the web-based "people" pages of all CS faculty, full-time staff, and students to the new "bio" page style. The old pages were generated from Purdue electronic directory information, which is incomplete and often out of date. The new "bio" pages are generated from a database maintained internally by the department and provide biographical information that you can manage yourself.

By July 30, the transition will be complete and all departmental "people" pages will point to the new "bio" pages.

You will continue to have two publishable URLS:

(1) Your department bio page: http://www.cs.purdue.edu/people/login

The content of this page is edited by logging in to your CS portals account at https://portals.cs.purdue.edu/ and selecting My Biography from the Resources link on the left. The layout and design of the "bio" page will be updated from time to time to be consistent with the evolving design of the department web site.

(2) Your personal home page: http://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/login

This page is completely under your control (subject to Purdue policies, of course!). You can use the web content editor of your choice. (The files are located in your UNIX .www directory.)

Note that only CS faculty, full-time staff, and students have "bio" pages. The people link for all other CS accounts is automatically redirected to the corresponding personal home page.
This change was not completed until Wednesday, August 1

OpenSSH 3.9 now makes a destinction between trusted and untrusted forwarded X11 connections. The intention is to provide more security with the X11 forwarding by not allowing remote X applications full access to the X server resources.

Many applications will not work over the untrusted X11 connection. We have chosen to maintain backward compatibility by designating all forwarded X11 connections as trusted by default. This is done by specifying "ForwardX11Trusted yes" in the system configuration file.

Individuals may want to take advantage of the enhanced security feature by turning off ForwardX11Trusted in their own ~/.ssh/config files.

If you are using SpamAssassin directly from procmail (most people probably are NOT and hence can ignore this part) and are using the Bayesian filtering, you will need to convert your Bayesian database to version 3 format before it will be used by SA 3.0.0.

  • disable spamassassin (i.e. remove it from .procmailrc)
  • run 2.63 version of sa-learn to sync the journal
         /p/spamassassin-2.63/bin/sa-learn --rebuild

  • run 3.0.0 version of sa-learn to upgrade the database format
         /p/spmassassin-3.0.0/bin/sa-learn --sync

There will be a complaint about not being able to load the version 2 database. This is OK, just give the conversion time to complete.
  • wait until after 9AM when the default is upgraded (i.e. spamassassin --version reports version 3.0.0)
  • re-enable spamassassin

6 October 2004

The version of SpamAssassin filtering software on the incoming mail server was upgraded from SpamAssassin version 2.63 to SpamAssassin version 3.0.0.

The only user visible changes should be in the mail headers added by SpamAssassin. In particular, the X-Spam-Status header will now list score=n.n instead of hits=n.n. If you are using pattern matching for this value (instead of the X-Spam-Level header), you will need to change your matching pattern.

23 July 2004

On Friday morning, July 23, we will be upgrading the Samba software on the Solaris machines to Samba 3.0.4. The upgrade window will be 8:00 AM until about 8:30 AM, but the downtime for an individual server will be very short (probably less than a minute).

For standard file access of UNIX shares from Windows machines, this should be a transparent change. The old server will be shut down and the new one restarted within a few seconds. Windows machines should reconnect without significant disruption.

There will be a couple changes with the Samba 3 upgrade that may be user visible for a few users. First, smbclient will now be able to authenticate properly with our Windows 2003 servers. This is only relevant for Solaris users trying to access Windows shares.

Second, with Samba 3 we will be removing the Samba printer shares. Windows users should attach to printers through the Windows printer server using \\printers\printername. Logs indicate the Samba printer shares have not been used in the last year or two, so this should not have a major impact.

Last, the Samba server on data.cs.purdue.edu will be turned off. This machine is not a fileserver and because we are no longer serving printers through Samba, there is no need to run a server there. If you are using \\data\something to access a UNIX share, please change it to the appropriate server. If you need help with this, please contact software@cs.purdue.edu.

Note: Because of a very recent security release, we will actually be upgrading to Samba 3.0.5.

Note: An additional configuration change is the way in which permissions are set on newly created entries (files and folders). It the past it was dependent on a global permission mask. With the new server, permissions and group owner will be inherited from the folder in which the file is created. The setgid bit on the folder (on the UNIX side) must be set for the group to be inherited.

Scheduled system downtimes

29 April 2008 - 1 August 2008

The HAAS 175 lab will be closed during the summer to allow for building infrastructure upgrades to power and network wiring.

18 April 2008

ITaP will be installing an upgrade on network switches in several buildings between 4AM and 6AM on Friday, April 18. One of the buildings affected is HAAS. The upgrade will require two reboots of each network switch, each reboot about 10 minutes. During these two 10 minute intervals, network connectivity in the building will be unreliable.
Note, LWSN should not be affected by this upgrade.
Note, this was originally scheduled for Friday, April 11, but ITaP has rescheduled it for the date given above.

10 April 2008

ITaP will be doing electrical work in HAAS that will require turning off the power conditioner in HAAS 274 from 9:00AM to 12:00noon (they may not need to whole three hours). This power conditioner distributes power to HAAS 175, HAAS 257 and HAAS 274. All the computers in HAAS 175 and some of the computers in HAAS 257 will be off during this time. They will be shut down about 8:00 so they are off before the power is turned off. There should not be in computers in HAAS 274 that are still connected to the power conditioner.

ITaP will be upgrading the fiber optic networking that provides network connectivity to the HAAS building. The work will be done between 7AM and 12noon. During this time there will be no network connectivity outside the building, including connections to LWSN. Please see the ITaP posting for more details or updates.
Update: The work time has been reduced to 8AM to 10AM.

20 December 2007

Solaris 8 and Solaris 10 systems will be updated to the current patch level. They will be rebooted between 5:00 AM and 8:00 AM on Thursday, December 20. Individual machines should only take about 5 minutes to reboot some time during the two hour window, but because of server dependencies the effective downtime may be longer.
Update: The Solaris 10 x86 systems were not updated because of problems with the patch distribution.

19 December 2007

The public wireless access points maintained by CS in HAAS will be removed at the end of the fall semester. These access points are currently providing ITaP PAL 1.0 service but are connected to the CS wired network infrastructure. We are removing that wiring to make way so ITaP can rewire the building. After that rewiring ITaP will install standard PAL 2.0 access points. CS users who are currently using the wireless service in HAAS will need to use wired DHCP connections during the rewiring project.
Note, this will not directly affect the private research group access points.
Update: ITaP has agreed to take over the management of the currently connected access points in HAAS. This will result in having PAL 2.0 service as well as the old PAL 1.0 service, but will eliminate the CS wireless access.

13 December 2007

The OS on the server Alkhwarizmi will be updated on Thursday morning, December 13 from Solaris 8 to Solaris 10. The system will be down from 6AM until about 8AM. During the upgrade, the filesystems /u/u15, /u/u18 and /u/u20 will not be available.

9 May 2007
On May 9, Force10 will be here to assist in completing the network switch upgrades that were not completed in March (see March 13 upgrades).

Portions of the network in Lawson will have short (1-2 hour) outages during the day.

These outages are necessary so that we can upgrade the network switches in the building. The new switches support power-over-ethernet (PoE) and were part of our original purchase agreement with Force10, but were not available until March.

The main networking closets on each floor will be upgraded sequencially starting with the basement and ending with the third floor. All office connections on a floor will be out for approximately one hour during the closet upgrade for that floor.

The upgrade work will not affect HAAS network connections (wired or wireless). It will not affect PAL wireless in Lawson.

Please contact us as soon as possible if this schedule interferes with a planned presentation or deadline so we can make the necessary adjustments.

2 April 2007 -- 4 April 2007

ITaP is in the process of switching to the production PAL wireless network. They expect to be completed by Wednesday.

12 March 2007 -- 14 March 2007

The switch upgrades should be completed. If you are experiencing network problems, please report them.

Portions of the network in Lawson will have short (1-2 hour) outages during spring break next week. We expect most of the outages to occur on Monday and Tuesday, with some possible cleanup work on Wednesday.

These outages are necessary so that we can upgrade the network switches in the building. The new switches support power-over-ethernet (PoE) and were part of our original purchase agreement with Force10, but were not available until now.

The upgrades on Monday will be in the instructional labs in the basement. This should have minimal (if any) impact on faculty and staff connections.

On Tuesday morning the main networking closets on each floor will be upgraded sequencially starting with the basement and ending with the third floor. All office connections on a floor will be out for approximately one hour during the closet upgrade for that floor.

If all goes well, the research labs (2149, 2161, 3133, 3151) will be upgraded on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday will be reserved for any areas not completed on Tuesday and any other necessary cleanup.

The upgrade work will not affect HAAS network connections (wired or wireless). It will not affect PAL wireless in Lawson.

Please contact us as soon as possible if this schedule interferes with a planned presentation or deadline so we can make the necessary adjustments.

23 October 2006

On Monday morning from 06:00-08:00 Lisa will be moved from MATH 419 to LWSN datacenter. During that time the server will be unavailable. This also means NIS service for the gradmath domain will be unavailable and the /u/u28 filesystem will be unavailable.
The move will also require an IP address change for the server. Because of this it will require having all active mounts of /u/u28 cleared before the move. If your home is on /u/u28, you need to be logged out of CS UNIX/Linux machines before 6AM Monday.
Other machines in the gradmath domain will need to rebind to the NIS server after the move. This may, in some cases, require a system reboot. If the domainname UNIX command reports "gradmath" for your workstation, please make sure all work is saved before 6AM Monday in case the system needs to be rebooted.

This is took longer than expected because of infrastructure problems. It was completed about 8:30.

19 October 2006

This is part 2 of the machine room move from MATH 419 to LWSN 2149A. The following machines are scheduled to be moved at the times indicated. Times are approximate and the moves may not take the full window of time. The move will require a change of IP address so DNS caches may need to be flushed to access the system after the move.

8AM-10AM
