TECHNICAL REPORT

This project is supported by Tektronix from March 2001 to August 2001. It is also presented in the Undergraduate Research Day sponsored by the School of Science at Purdue University on April 7, 2001.

Proposal:

The goals of this project are to first survey and compare the different technologies in use for digital copyright management.  Techniques used for different kinds of media will be studied, including software, text, and other forms of intellectual property.  Next, improvements will be suggested and, if appropriate, implemented.  These might involve using the watermarking and software tamperproofing techniques developed at
CERIAS,  The milestones for the project (and estimated effort in months) are as follows:
1) Surveying the relevant literature (books, conference proceedings, and online information on the web).  The estimated time for this is 1 month.
2) Comparing the technologies in use from the points of view of security, generality, performance, usability and convenience.  This may involve tests to quantify the above.
The estimated time for this is 1 month.
3) Investigating the possible use of the novel technologies developed at CERIAS (especially tamperproofing and watermarking technologies) to enhance the resilience to attack of digital copyright management schemes. The estimated time
for this is 1 month (although 1 months is adequate time to produce results, this part of the project could benefit from an extension into part of the summer).
