2nd ACM SIGKDD International Workshop on Privacy, Security, and Trust in KDD

The field of computer science is evolving to incorporate intrinsically complex social, organizational, and political environments in which computers are situated. Nowhere is this more apparent, and the influence of data mining professionals more critical, than in the often debated arenas of privacy, security, and trust. There is an ever-increasing demand for the incorporation of new technologies to gather data on people for a variety of worthwhile endeavors. Data mining methodologies provide an excellent framework to assist data holders, such as security and surveillance officials, to sort through the data deluge and discover useful nuggets of intelligence. At the same time, the application of data mining methods to person-specific data raises many concerns over confidentiality and citizens' privacy rights. If not properly addressed, mishandling of the data can harm both the corresponding persons and data holders, leading to a loss in the public's trust. Ensuring privacy and security, as well as establishing trust are essential for the provision of electronic and knowledge-based services in modern e-business, e-commerce, e-government, and e-health environments.

To inject privacy and trust into security and surveillance data mining projects, it is necessary to understand what are the goals of the latter. Last year, we organized the first instantiation of this workshop (PinKDD07) to introduce researchers from disparate environments, including business, security, and theory to learn about the concerns and potential solutions regarding their challenges. This was a fruitful beginning, but there is still much work left to do, and in this year's workshop, we hope to integrate research on privacy, security, and how issues of trust can be resolved or modeled within a data mining framework. This will be a one-day workshop. In addition to peer-reviewed research papers, we will have an invited speaker at the forefront of the issues. Informal workshop proceedings will be available at the workshop and online. Last year we worked with Springer to publish the post-workshop proceedings as a volume in Lecture Notes in Computer Science (volume 4890). This year's post-workshop proceedings will also be published as a volume in Lecture Notes in Computer Science www.springer.com/lncs.
