Hicham is a PhD candidate in the Computer Science Department. His research interests are in database management systems, data stream management systems and spatio-temporal databases. His advisor is Professor Walid Aref, and expects to earn his PhD in 2009. Hicham was the college valedictorian when he graduated Summa Cum Laude with his B.S. from Alexandria Universiry, Egypt in 1998.

Hicham received Purdue University Andrews Fellowship in 2001, a Computer Science departmental fellowship in 2002, and the 2005 TechPoint MIRA award for Education (Knowledge Projection Project). Hicham was the instructor of Computer Architecture (a core course) and Numerical Methods (an upper level course) in Fall 2002 and Summer 2005 respectively at CS. He was awarded the Purdue University Outstanding Teaching Award in 2003. He was also nominated three times by the College of Science for the university-wide Excellence in Teaching award in 2005, 2006 and 2008. In 2008, Hicham received his Graduate Teacher Certificate from Purdue.

While being a research intern in the database group at Microsoft Research, Hicham worked under the mentorship of Paul Larson in 2006. During this internship, Hicham worked in the Lazy Maintenance of Materialized Views project. A patent was filed for as a result of this project. In 2007, Hicham returned back for his second research internship with the database group at Microsoft Research. He investigated parallelizing SQL Server query optimizer with Paul Larson. In 2008, Hicham had his third research internship, but with the Data Management, Exploration and Mining Group at Microsoft Research and was reporting to Vivek Narasayya.

Hicham is a student member of IEEE, ACM and Upsilon Pi Epsilon computer science honor society. He also served in the organizing committee of the Midwest Database Research Symposium in 2005. He attended the PUPD Citizens Police Academy in 2008. In 2007-2008 academic year, Hicham served as a senator in Purdue Graduate Student Senate. He also served in Purdue College of Science Graduate Student Council as well as Purdue Computer Science Graduate Student Board in the same time frame.
