Purdue CS Alumnus Elected AAAS Fellow

Dr. Alan Hevner, an alumnus of Purdue University’s Department of Computer Science (B.S. '73, M.S. '76, and PhD ’79), was recently elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest general scientific society. Fellows are elected each year whose "efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished." According to the AAAS Council, Dr. Hevner is specifically being honored for "distinguished research contributions to the field of computer sciences, particularly in the areas of design science research, Cleanroom software engineering, and distributed database systems."

Dr. Hevner is currently a professor at the University of South Florida, where he is an Eminent Scholar in the Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department and holds the Citigroup/Hidden River Chair of Distributed Technology. He joined the faculty of USF in 1994 after serving on the faculties of the University of Maryland and the University of Minnesota. He was recognized by Purdue Computer Science as an Outstanding Alumnus in the Spring of 2007.

Dr. Hevner’s many noteworthy scholarly achievements include his doctoral research on Query Optimization in Distributed Database Systems and his work with Dr. Harlan Mills on pivotal ideas in Cleanroom software engineering. During the past decade, Dr. Hevner has shown influential leadership in shifting the research paradigm of Information Systems toward design science, which seeks "to extend the boundaries of human and organizational capabilities by creating new and innovative artifacts." In 2010, he co-authored (with Dr. Samir Chatterjee) Design Research in Information Systems: Theory and Practice, which further explores the design science research paradigm.

At the 2012 Annual Meeting of AAAS in Vancouver, British Columbia, Dr. Hevner will be presented with a certificate and rosette, acknowledging his recognition as an AAAS Fellow.
