MedIX: MEDical Informatics eXperiences in undergraduate research

The NSF REU Program in Medical Informatics (MedIX) at DePaul University, Northwestern University, and University of Chicago enters its fourth year. We are looking for bright undergraduate students to get involved in research in the area of Medical Informatics for the summer of 2008. Participants will receive a stipend of $4,000 plus travel support to/from the REU site at the beginning/end of the program, travel support to present summer work at a conference, and subsistence allowance.

 

 

Summer Support for Each Student:

·         $4,000 stipend (paid a weekly stipend of $400 for each of the 10 weeks),

·         $1,475 in travel costs ($250 travel costs to and from Chicago; $225 for public transportation that will cover local travel costs incurred during the summer program such as travel to/ from dorms to lab, and to/from the participating REU sites in this program; $1,000 to attend a conference for paper presentations)

·         housing on campus will be arranged at the students' expense ( for more information about housing, click here)

·         $1,087 subsistence allowance (includes half of expected housing costs ($625) and meals during orientation week and special events ($462))

Program Requirements:

·         US citizenship or permanent residency

·         Full time undergraduate student with at least 1 year of college/university course work completed as of September 1st, 2008.

·         Students are not allowed to have other jobs/internships during the REU program or to be registered for any courses

 

 

Statistics on the previous REU MedIX Program (2005-2007):

 

•88% students had at least one research publication

 

•over 23 publications (1 journal paper, 15 conference papers, 8 extended abstracts)

 

•3 honor theses and senior projects, 4 fellowships to support graduate school, and 1 Computing Research (CRA) honor mention for outstanding undergraduate research.

 

 


2008 AMALTHEA REU Program: theory and applications of Machine Learning (ML)

We are happy to announce the availability of a research experience for undergraduates this summer in Central Florida, namely the 2008 AMALTHEA REU Program. Its intellectual focus is the theory and applications of Machine Learning (ML) and is a cooperative effort of Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) in Melbourne and University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando. The program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and is held for 10 weeks in the summer, starting in mid May and ending mid July.

 

We are looking for talented Engineering or Science undergraduates that are US citizens or permanent residents and are in good academic standing.

Minorities, women and the disabled are especially encouraged to apply.

Computer Security Research Experience for Undergraduates in Science and Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park

 

We’re looking for Computer Security Scholars for the 2008 summer research experience for undergraduates (REU) program at the University of Maryland, College Park.

 

APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 1, 2008

 

The Women in Engineering Program at the University of Maryland is seeking applications for Scholars to become integral members of 5 team-based research projects in computer security coordinated by faculty in the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Students majoring in engineering, computer science, math, and physical science are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

Teams conduct research from May 27 through August 1, 2008. The program offers multiple tiers of mentorship and training in team skills and project organization, as well as addressing issues of concern to women in science and engineering. Each Scholar receives a $4,000 stipend, $300 food allowance and housing.  Funding is available for transportation.

The University of Kentucky Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program from June 5 - August 1, 2008.

Over the 8-week summer research experience, twelve undergraduate students will be exposed to faculty, graduate students, research staff, and other undergraduate students in a developing community that incorporates research activities with field trips, workshops, or other social activities. Several projects are available in a wide range of areas within Electrical & Computer Engineering.

The Computer Science department at the University of Southern California (USC) is pleased to announce the commencement of our Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site.

The REU site program is a summer internship program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for motivated undergraduate students. Students accepted to the program will work on research projects with faculty at the USC's Computer Science department.
Research projects are available in diverse areas within Computer Science spanning software engineering, algorithms, networks, robotics, and artificial intelligence. There will also be programs in professional ethics and a social program specifically designed for the REU site participants.

We welcome students from all backgrounds; we are particularly interested in attracting students with strong research potential who are traditionally underrepresented in graduate school within Computer Science and related fields.
