What to do if you want to CODO/change your major

How do I change my major?

At Purdue, when a student wants to change majors, we refer to this as a Change of Degree Objective, CODO.  Moving from one school to another school is generally considered a change of degree objective.

1.      What do I do if I don’t know what I want my major to be?

a.       http://www.science.purdue.edu/careers/career_development/index.asp

b.      CCO-Science offers one-on-one help with choosing a major and figuring out what you want to do with your major. A career counselor will work with you in looking at yourself, exploring the World of Work, and deciding what steps you need to take. Talking with a counselor can help you understand what you are finding out about yourself and can help you decide appropriate next steps in the process.

c.       Call 494-1771 or stop by Math 231 to make an appointment with a career counselor.

3.      Requirements to CODO: Course/grade/GPA/Meeting requirements

b.      Individual program web sites: http://www.purdue.edu/Purdue/academics/index.html

4.      Contacts

a.       Establish who you should contact for in depth information ( http://www.purdue.edu/VPSS/codo/codo.php ). It is very important that you attend a meeting with the advisor in the school you are intending to codo. You should download a plan of study of the major to see which classes to schedule that will be used in your "future" major. http://www.purdue.edu/advisors/academic_advising/enrolled_major_plans.shtml

5.      Will the courses I’ve completed count for my new major?

a.       If they do not meet specific requirements, they will possibly count for a ‘free elective.’

b.      You may request a “What If” progress report on SSINFO under the Academic section.  This will show how your current courses will count.  *Not all majors are available for this feature.*

6.      You continue to register through Science until you are officially accepted into the new program.  Advisors do not have access to register all students at Purdue.

7.      4th semester rule

a.       You may not register for classes in the College of Science beyond the 4th semester if you are not interested in pursuing a degree in Science. If you are not able to get into your desired school/program by the 4th semester, you will have to CODO to Undergraduate Studies Program (USP) and work on meeting the requirements for your new school from there.

8.      Redlining

a.       The process of removing grades from the calculation of GPA.

b.      Policies differ from program to program…contact your desired program for specifics

9.      Actual CODO process: **To be completed once you are eligible**

a.       Request CODO papers from SSINFO or Registrar’s Office, HOVD 45

b.      Pick up papers from HOVD 45

c.       Obtain signature from Science by seeing the receptionist in MATH 231

d.      Take them to your desired school/program

10.  Once you are accepted into your new major, the following things may change:

a.       Some courses may be deleted ("redlined") from your graduation index.

b.      Previously deleted courses may be added back to your graduation index.

c.       The total number of hours available toward graduation may vary.

d.      Your semester classification may be raised or lowered.
