Me
Then (before 1985):
I am from India,
born in the state of
Kerala
: the vista of silent valleys clothed in the richest green,
and grew up in the state of
Rajasthan
: a desert land, most significant for bio-diversity values.
Vidhya Vihar Pilani, an oasis in Rajasthan, is where I grew up, got my education,
got married, had both my children Gitanjali &
Ravishankar
, and started my teaching and research carrier in computer science.
Vidhya Vihar is a beautiful University campus of Birla Institute of Technology
and Science (BITS).
My elementary and high school education were from Birla Shishu Vihar, and
Birla Balika Vidhya
Peeth
.
I completed B.Sc, M.Sc(Math),M.Tech(CS), and Ph.D.(CS) degrees from
Birla Institute of Technology
and Science
at Pilani.
The all-marble Saraswati temple Sharada
Peeth
, is a twentieth century modern temple with main idol of Godess
Saraswati, a symbol of knowledge. This beautiful temple is the center of the
BITS campus.
In January 1985, after having Pilani as my home for about thirty years, I moved to
USA.
Now (after 1985):
On the cold and snowy night of January 29 1985, I landed at Atlanta, Georgia
as a Fullbright Fellow in the department of Information and Computer Science at Georgia Institute
of Technology. After 6 months of eager waiting my family
joined me in August 1985. In August 1987 we moved to West Lafatyette, Indiana
to join the department of Computer Science at Purdue University.
After teaching for three years in The CS department, I decided to lighten my academic activities and focus on community involvements. I volenteered in the highschool parent association and tutored highschool students and worked part time in the community college. All this gave me a good sense of belonging to the community of West Lafayette and time to monitor better my growing children and their activities.
In 1994 I went back to Purdue University as a Program Coordinator for a new interdisciplinary graduate Computational Science and
Engineering program. Since 2004 I am with Computing Research Institute (CRI) at Purdue University. I am the Educational Programs
Coordinator for the Interdisciplinary Graduate Specializations: CS&E and CLS.
I continued with my hobby (music), by playing Sitar in the chamber music setting, leaning piano (for the first time), choreographing Indian dances and directing short plays for the community.
In 2002 I took the big step of starting Sitar lessons in West Lafayette in
Ragini
Music Studio.
