General questions

How defensive should my programming be?

Your code needs to handle all legal situations, but you need not spend a lot of time protecting against "illegal" situations. For example, our definition of a word allows nonsensical sequences such as a'b'c'd'e''''f, so your code should be prepared to index and search for this sequence if it occurs. However, as we will not expect the illegal sequence 'a' to be indexed, we will not try to search for it, either.
