Accessing the Profile Editor

The profile editor is implemented as an X window system application on a Sun Sparc workstation. There are two methods for accessing the profile editor. The preferable method is to install a copy of the profile editor on your own machine. This will optimize response time of the interface. However, the machine on which the constraint solver is installed must be a Sun. The second option is to run the profile editor remotely. This will have a detrimental effect on the real-time execution of the interface component of the program. The constraint solver can be run as a remote X application on any machine which has an X window interface.

Installation on Local Machine

The profile editor can be installed on a Sun Sparc workstation. The executable for the constraint solver can be obtained via anonymous ftp to cs.purdue.edu/pub/cmh/Programs/gcs/solver.tar (5.75M). The system requires approximately 10M to install and execute. When extracted, the tar file will include the following files:
     README
     INSTALL
     OTHER.tar.Z
     PARSER.tar.Z
     xerep2D.Z
in a directory named xerep2D. Installation is completed by following the directions in the INSTALL file. The README file gives information on who to contact for further information and for bug reports.

Remote Operation

If you do not have a Sun Workstation or cannot install the profile editor on your local machine, but have an X display, you can run the profile editor by performing an "xhost +arthur.cs.purdue.edu" on your machine, entering your display name here, and pressing the EXECUTE button:

User's Manual

A postscript format user's manual other than this tutorial is also available. The manual is a portion of another document, and begins on page 12 and ends on page 18 of that document.
