COURSE OBJECTIVE

The objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive organizational approach to Information Systems. Of special note is the development of a strong relationship between the Information System, its responsibilities, and the organizational environment within which this system must interact.

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Strategic Role of Information Systems, Organizations and Information Systems, Decision Making, Ethical and Social Impact of Information Systems, Technology Trends, Information Systems Software, Database Management Systems, Networks, The Internet, Intranets, Implementing Information Systems, Expert Systems, Decision Support Systems, Controlling Information Systems, Managing International Information Systems.

PREREQUISITES

Basic understanding of computing systems and at least one course in databases or data structures. Prerequisites may be waived with permission of the instructor.

Your grade in this course will be determined according to the following weighting factors:

  40%  Assignments (for each chapter)
  60%  Three Exams
       Exam 1: Session 14
       Exam 2: Session 27
       Exam 3: Session 40

The assignments will be approximately 10 questions for each chapter. These will be assigned in class upon the completion of discussion on that chapter. The due date will be 2 days later. The due date will depend upon when you view the session -- according to the following schedule shown to the right. The preferred manner for submitting assignments to the class Teaching Assistant is e-mail -- with paper submitted in class, fax, and US mail accepted as well. Assignments will be accepted late with a 10% per day late penalty (excluding weekend days).

Each exam will be a 50-question multiple choice test. Each exam will cover material from that third of the course.

IMPORTANT -- Exams can only be "made up" in extraordinary circumstances if arrangements are made with Prof. Dunsmore in advance.

In CS 590M it is most likely that we will use the following grading curve:

  90-100 = A
  80- 89 = B
  70- 79 = C
  60- 69 = D
below 60 = below D
