CS-690D: New Trends in Database
Systems
Instructor: Walid G. Aref
MWF 2:30-3:20PM
Room: CS-111
General:
The target of this course is to
familiarize the students with the advances and the
on-going research in some of the
"hot" areas in the database field, and get
the student involved in more depth
in one or more of these areas.
Topics:
The course will focus on the following
five tracks:
-
The spatial database track
-
The multimedia database track
-
The data mining track
-
The web database track
-
The database engine track
We will be covering a collection of
papers in each track during the semester. Students may present papers from
any one or more of the above tracks. In addition we will be covering parts
of the textbook by V.S. Subrahmanian in the multimedia database track.
Grading:
There is no final or mid-term exams
in this course. However, the course grade will be based on the active participation
in the class discussions, the paper presentations, and a semester-long
project.
The grade will be distributed in
the following way:
-
Presentations: 40%-50% (based on the
number of presentations given by the student)
-
Project: 30%-40% (based on the complexity
of the project)
-
Homework Assignments: 10%
-
Class Discussions and Participation:
10%
The Project:
The project will involve implementing
some of the techniques covered in class with
some modifications to them, or
performing comparative studies between alternative
techniques. I will be providing
you with a list of possible projects to choose from.
A good project would possibly result
in writing a publishable paper.
