General:
This seminar course will focus on database systems and their role in several interdisciplinary research areas.
Topics to be covered include:

• XML and Internet Databases: Background, Prototype Systems, and Research Issues
• Sensor Networks, Stream Data Management and Query Processing
• Data Mining, OLAP, and Decision Support
• Genomics Databases and Bioinformatics: Modeling (High-throughput Sequencing, Microarrays, ..), Querying, and Data Mining
• Object and Object-relational Database Systems
• Case Studies: Oracle9i, IBM DB2 Universal Server, and MS SQL Server 2000.
• Spatial and Spatio-temporal Data Management: Real-time GIS, Location Services, and Adaptive Spatial Query Processing

Grading:
There are no final or mid-term exams in this course. However, the course grade will be based on the active participation in class discussions,
paper presentations, paper reviewing, and a semester-long project.

The grade will be distributed in the following way:

    Presentations: 35%
    Project: 40%
    Paper Reviews: 15%
    Class Discussions and Participation: 10%

    Silberschatz, Korth, and Sudarshan

    Database Management Systems (Second Edition)
    Raghu Ramakrishnan and Johannes Gehrke.
