SSH Tunneling
Facilities Software Staff
This document describes how to configure PuTTY to tunnel POP, IMAP and SMTP services through a secure SSH connection. POP and IMAP are for reading mail, SMTP is for sending mail. With secure tunneling you can access the CS services from remote locations. It will allow you to continue to use older mail programs that do not support secure connections (SSL).
- Download PuTTY
- First, it is necessary to download and install the PuTTY application. For the purposes of tunneling the connections, you only need the putty.exe file.
- Configure PuTTY to use SSH2, tunnel ports
- For simplicity we have pre-configured registry scripts. Run the appropriate script for your system:
- Configure your mail client
- This is highly dependent on your mail client (or browser). For both your outgoing mail server and your incoming mail server, replace the machine.cs.purdue.edu entry with localhost.
- Start PuTTY
- Start PuTTY, enter the hostname of your CS mail machine in the Host Name (or IP address) field and click Connect. Then enter your CS login and password when prompted.
You should now be able to check your CS mail. Note: you must have the PuTTY application connected every time you want to read or send mail through your CS account.
You may want to get the whole suite of PuTTY tools. See our Remote Access page for more details. Detailed information on configuring tunnels is available in the PuTTY Help file.
