About Us
The Computer Science Department and the College of Science at Purdue University created and supports a unique program called Reaching Out for Computer Science (ROCS). ROCS is an outreach program that focuses on students from kindergarten to 12th grade in the local Midwest area around West Lafayette, IN. ROCS is made up of a group of computer science students who want to share their experiences and knowledge of computer science. These Purdue University students help school administrators, teachers, and students know what a career in computer science is all about, as well as what courses student need if they wish to pursue a degree in computer science. The ROCS presentation also explores the difference between computer science and other computer related careers. The ROCS presentation is a fun and interactive way for computer science students to relate their interests and experiences. The ROCS program at Purdue University is widely known around the Midwest and throughout the nation. In 2007, ROCS was featured in the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing sponsored by the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology in Orlando, FL.
Fun Facts about CS
1.) The tape robot in the basement of MATH can store 13 Petabytes.
2.) Google processes over 20 petabytes of data per day. 1 Petabyte = 1024 Terabytes = 2^50 Bytes
3.) One exabyte is the equivalent to about 50,000 years of DVD quality video. 1 Exabyte = 1024 Petabytes = 2^60
4.) Mark Liberman calculated the storage requirements for all human speech at 42 zettabytes, if digitized as 16 kHz 16-bit audio.
1 Zettabyte = 1024 Exabytes
5.) SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence): SETI@home and have collectively contributed over 19 billion hours of computer processing time.
