By the CS Department:
Stipends in 2008-2009 for half-time (20 hours per week) graduate assistantships start at $16,146 for the academic year (fall and spring semester).
Tuition for graduate assistants is remitted. Fees for incoming graduate assistants in fall 2008 were about $777 per semester. International students pay an additional $60 per semester.
Students that are teaching assistants in the spring and fall semesters of a calendar year are eligible for tuition and fee reduction in the intervening summer even if they do not hold an assistantship in the summer. Others must be graduate assistants in the summer.
The University provides medical insurance for graduate assistants employed at least half-time for at least one semester. In 2008-2009 assistants pay approximately $300 of the annual cost. Purdue pays the rest. The university also contributes to the healthcare costs for dependents of graduate assistants.
The tasks of graduate assistants usually are teaching, grading, consulting, developing software, maintaining systems, or conducting research.
The usual and expected course load for half-time assistants who are not engaged in thesis research is three graduate courses per semester.
In semesters, the term of service begins one week before the beginning of classes and ends on the Tuesday following the end of final examinations.
Teaching assistants whose native language is not English must be certified by the Oral English Proficiency Test (OEPT) , or have a minimum score of 50 on the Test of Spoken English (TSE), or a minimum score of 27 in the speaking section of the internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT), or a minimum score of 7 on the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
Teaching asistants and other graduate assistants without assurance of an assistantship in the summer must make a special request to receive support in the summer.
Support after the fourth semester is contingent upon availability of departmental funds and satisfactory academic progress which includes successfully completing the Qualifying Process.
By Other Purdue Departments and Offices:
All CS graduate students may apply for assistantships in other Purdue departments or offices. The most common way that CS graduate students hear about graduate assistantships is through notices sent out by the graduate office.
The Mathematics Department and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures frequently give teaching assistantships to graduate students who are not enrolled in their program.
