Year 1 Semester 1 three courses

including at least two qualifying courses

register for and take the qualifying exams for the qualifying courses
Semester 2 three courses

including remaining qualifying courses

register for and take the qualifying exams for the qualifying courses
Year 2 Semester 3 three courses

including remaining courses of the "seven course requirement" of the plan of study

complete the Qualifying Examination, Part 1

begin looking for a thesis advisor

Semester 4 three courses

toward the "five course requirement" of the plan of study

choose a research area

select a thesis advisor

complete the Qualifying Examination Part 2

form an Advisory Committee

file a Plan of Study

Year 3 Semester 5 remaining courses of the plan of study plus seminars and special topics courses in the areas of interest  
Semester 6

take the Preliminary Examination
