Dr. Weerawarana's research interests involve various issues in Problem Solving Environments (PSEs) for computational science applications. He has addressed several research issues in this regard including a. Studing the architecture of PSEs on both traditional (distributed collections of workstations and parallel computers) and non-traditional (mobile computers connected via wireless networks) computing platforms, b. Designing and implementing PDE PSEs, c. Designing and implementing symbolic languages for PSEs, e. Integrating symbolic and numeric computation in scientific PSEs, f. Designing and implementing software frameworks for building PSEs, g. Integrating computation and physical experimentation to form virtual laboratories, h. Network computing using scientific PSEs as an application, and i. Using the World Wide Web for delivering educational content.
