Professor Elmagarmid received a Presidential Young Investigator award from the National Science Foundation. This research has been funded by the AT&T Foundation, Bell Northern Research, Tektronix, and Mobil Oil; from the State of Indiana through the Indiana Business Modernization and Technology Corporation and from the Federal Government through the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Purdue University and the Purdue Research Foundation.
Professor Elmagarmid is the editor-in-chief of Distributed and Parallel Databases: An International Journal. He is editor of Information Sciences, IEEE Transactions on Computers, and was an editor of the IEEE Data Engineering Bulletin.
He has chaired the First International Workshop on Interoperability of Multidatabase Systems (IMS91), Kyoto, Japan, the IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering, and was the Steering Committee Chair for the RIDE Workshop series. He has served on the program committees of many conferences, workshops, and symposia.
Professor Elmagarmid has an active research program in the area of distributed
databases. He has written and edited books, book chapters, and journal and conference articles. He is principle investigator of the InterBase project looking into the design and implementation of heterogeneous distributed databases. He has consulted for many companies and has lectured on the subject nationally and internationally. He has been an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer and served on the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board.
Professor Elmagarmid's research interests focus on the consistency aspects of distributed databases; heterogeneous, federated, and multidatabases; and transaction management for advanced database applications.
